The reason for the different impression between "man" and "Caucasian"
is simple. Caucasian is a special designation CREATED for the purpose
to set off persons belonging to it from other persons. There is nothing
bigoted in that; it is a legitimate scientific expression as a variety
of Human. "Man" on the other hand was not coined for the purpose of
offsetting the sexes; it is the translation of the Latin Homo which is
the name of the species we belong to. Just how it came that it acquired
a second meaning to designate the male gender I can't tell you, but it
is certainly not the only instance of words having two meanings. It
seems we already had an e-mail debate on this years ago.
