Dear Regents, Trustees and Staff:
This is indeed an exciting time for our country. With President
Obama officially sworn in, we look forward to the future with
hope and promise. And with that optimism comes the
acknowledgement of hard work ahead.
Point has exciting news for the New Year and we look forward to
continuing our mission of giving our LGBT community the best
gift we can: a future.

Scholar Participates in International Foundation
for Gender Education
As you may have read in the most recent issue of
Mentoring Messenger, 2007
Point Scholar Joelle Ruby Ryan, PhD candidate at Bowling
Green State University, chaired a
National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) panel
discussion on resisting transphobia in academia. Her
mentor, Lynn Conway, attended the panel session and
reported about it on her personal website (Lynnconway.com).
On the heels of her success, Joelle will be
participating in another panel at the International
Foundation for Gender Education (IFGE) in Washington
D.C. next month. The Conference will address issues
related to how transgender identities have been
pathologized in academia.
“I am very excited to be participating in a panel at the
International Foundation
for Gender Education (IFGE) in February 2009 in
Washington, D.C. The panel is entitled
" 'Disordered' No More: Challenging Transphobia in
Psychology, Academia and Society" and it examines
the ways in which transgender identities have been
pathologized and demonized in some streams of scientific
and academic research and policy. I have had the
pleasure of working on this panel, as well as a previous
(2008)
panel held at the National Women's Studies Association,
with my Point
Foundation Mentor Lynn Conway. Lynn has served as a
Session Advisor and has been generous with her time,
enthusiastic and supportive of this work. It is our
hope that this panel will be one more humble
contribution to aid in the struggle for civil rights and
human dignity for all transgender people. The
Mentorship and Community Service Projects are wonderful
components of the Point Foundation that are spurring
both positive community relationships and important
academic and activist work. We are at an exciting
tipping point in the quest for LGBT Liberation, and
Point should be commended for the formidable role it is
playing in engendering positive social transformation.”
