In response to Thomas Whetstone’s e-mail, the following:
Dear WPATH colleagues:
It’s possible that many WPATH members have not read Bailey’s book, and are thus not fully aware of how and why it so deeply offended thousands upon thousands of trans women. To understand why so many women protested the book, please study the following page.
It contains direct quotes from the book, with links to the original pages for confirmation in context:
“Direct Quotes from Bailey's Book"http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TS/Bailey/BaileyQuotes.html
When studying those quotes, please note that Bailey's unfounded pronouncements on transsexualism are delivered as if they were "scientific facts" – and delivered without mercy.
Only by reading those words, and thinking about how they felt to ever so many trans women out there, can you possibly understand the terrible pain Bailey has caused our community.Regarding the trans-community response to the book: I am only surprised that it was not harsher, given the level of provocation on Bailey's part. Instead, the response was a very widespread, inclusive, well-organized and effective one that succeeded in exposing Mr. Bailey's book for what it was.
