I personally am not worried about this issue, but the fact that my  
wife is gives me a little bit more vested interest in finding a good  
solution.

I did want to dispel one myth though. I happen to know the person who  
wrote gmail, and I was fairly certain that gmail does not harvest  
links in e-mail texts. To verify this, I asked him:

An acquaintance of mine recently suggested that gmail will grab links  
in e-mail messages and use them to index pages for google search,  
such that if you have an unlinked page, but mention it an e-mail to a  
gmail address, that the page will get indexed. My feeling is that  
this is a misunderstanding of the workings of gmail. I thought the  
best person to ask would be the source.

and here is his response:

That's nonsense. If Gmail did that, it would break all kinds of  
things. Just
think of all the "click here to unsubscribe" type of links. There are  
many
ways for "secret" urls to leak, but Gmail is not one of them. (web  
server
referrer logs are the most common)
