Dear Mr Reeves

PROTECTING PUBLIC HEALTH

Thank you for your email to the First Minister expressing your support
for the plans he recently announced to ban smoking in enclosed public
places. Mr McConnell has asked me to reply on his behalf.

The First Minister welcomes your support and has asked me to convey
his thanks for taking the time to write to him. The ban on smoking in
enclosed public places will, we believe, save lives and improve the
health of the people of Scotland, and our international image.

In reaching their decisions, Ministers were able to call upon the
growing body of evidence about the health effects of second hand
smoke.	Our hugely successful process of public consultation revealed
strong support for a comprehensive ban and we will be looking to build
upon this over the months ahead, as we move towards a target date for
full implementation of Spring 2006.

Further information about the smoking ban or other aspects of the
Executive's tobacco control policy is available on the Scottish
Executive website: www.scotland.gov.uk

Once again thank you for your interest in this important health issue.

Gill
