The Rational Band
The rational band is that part of the
time scale of human action
that is characterized by task behavior (classical reasoning).
This band of primary concern to
expert systems
designers and logicist AI researchers. It is characterized by
knowledge as the medium of transaction; thus the
rational band and the
knowledge level are somewhat
equivalent terms. The rational band assumes that
the
knowledge representation
is metaphysically and epistemologically adequate.
However, for systems unconstrained by an underlying
cognitive band,
heuristic adequacy is a primary concern. This simply means that although
knowledge may be applicable to a given problem, accessing and using the
knowledge may be intractable (or so slow that it is effectively so).
Such systems may be said to ignore the
real-time constraint for cognition.
