The Biological Band
The
biological band, which is situated just below the cognitive band in the
time scale of human action, is characterized
by the physiological properties of neurons. The neural level, within
the biological band, is a strong
level and may be described in terms of well-specified behavior
laws (e.g., Hodgkin-Huxley action potential propagation, Rall's
cable equations, etc.). Above the neural level however, is the neural
circuit level which has not
been as carefully scrutinized as the neuron level. The medium of
transaction in this neural ciruit level is activation. The action
of this level may be considered as symbol access, with patterns of activation
across a number of neurons corresponding to a specific symbol.
The biological band is
the chief concern of connectionist reseachers and the addition of specific
organization to neural circuits leads to an approximation of the lower
levels of the cognitive band.
