Serial Behavior in the Midst of Parallelism in Soar
Serial Processing in the Midst of Parallelism in Soar
Although the
elaboration phase of
the decision cycle
is essentially
parallel, decision cycles occur sequentially,
one after the other, with no overlap. Thus, Soar exhibits serial
behavior which arises out of the (implicit) parallelism.
This is notable because human behavior (in particular
problem solving) is serial although
the
neural band in
humans is massively parallel. Thus, as a
unified theory of
cognition, Soar demonstrates that serial behavior can emerge out of
underlying parallel processing.
