Real-Time Behavior
Soar exhibits many of the properties that are required by the
real-time
constraint on cognition. In particular, it has a
symbol system which may be
accessed quickly (via the action of the
production matcher) and is
written to more slowly (via
chunking). Automatic behavior
derives from the action of the
elaboration phase
but the entire
decision cycle concludes
with a deliberate (or controlled) act. Finally, the system
learns from experience, gradually moving from
difficult to routine behavior.
