Theories of Intelligence

Developing concurrently with Integrated Cognitive Architectures is the theory of what constitues an architecture for intelligence. Each individual author has his or her own viewpoints, and of course develops their respective system accordingly. There are however some 'meta-level' theories about what, in general, is necessary for intelligence. A select few of the more promenent theories are discussed in general below. Each theory then is linked to specific architectures which either seem to support or refute its claims.

John R. Anderson

Theory of Rational Analysis, which claims that we can understand intelligence by analizing the Environment.

Allen Newell

Developed SOAR as a Unified Theory of Cognition.

Zenon Pylyshyn

Discussion of what constitues an Architecture for Intelligence.

Herbert A. Simon

Theory of Bounded Rationality, which claims that understanding intelligence lies in understanding the resourses available to a system and how that system copes with it's limited resourses.
