Brooks was a developer and proponent of Subsumption Architecture, a hierarchical architecture for defining reactive robots for dynamic worlds using minimal state. He later refined Subsumption Architecture into Behavior-Based Programming to allow agents to have some global state.
Brooks' work has been influential to the field. In particular Gat uses some aspects of Subsumption Architecture in his architecture Atlantis.
Brooks is a faculty member at MIT.
