Real-time performance
The most prominent property of the AIS architecture is it's real-time performance. Due to the type of problem the AIS architecture is being applied to, such as regulating life-support in the Guardian system, the AIS architecture must be guaranteed to operate in real-time. This real-time performance is enable by the system's guaranteed inter-operation latencies, time-stress responsivity, graceful degredation, and speed-knowledge independance.
Guaranteed inter-operation latencies
The satisficing cycle give the AIS system the ability to work in a "best-next" fashion. The cycle can be interrupted by the system at any time, with the cycle returning the best solution found up until the interrupt.
Time-stress responsivity
AIS's focus of attention and resources allows the system to increase it's responsiveness as the time stress of the situation increases.
Graceful degredation
The system's graceful degredation is a combination of all its real-time enabling operations.
The "best-next" satisficing cycle and its ability to be interrupted, time-stress responsivity, and
dynamic I/O channels all promote graceful degredation.
Speed-knowledge independance
An increase in the system's total knowledge does not result in a decrease in system speed or real-time performance. This is a direct result of the satisficing cycle's "best-next" performance and interuptibility.
Cognitive versatility
Another property exhibited by the AIS architecture is that of cognitive versatility. The architecture displays this property in a number of ways.
Multi-Faceted Expertise
The architecture has the ability to integrate knowledge of multiple problem classes, multiple problem-solving methods, and multiple domains of factual knowledge.
Concurrent Reasoning Abilities
The architecture can interleave the discrete cognitive operations that make-up its reasoning cycles to allow concurrent reasoning activities.
Explanantion
The architecture allows the system to generate and record explicit plans, and to explain the actions and their consequences.
