Mataric's Modification of Subsumption Architecture
An Example of Planning and Learning in a Subsumption Architecture
Mataric [1991]
describes some modifications to the subsumption architecture
to allow it recognize landmarks, learn map features, and to
navigate based on
this map (planning). The basic subsumption architecture is not violated
in Mataric's scheme (i.e. it is not organized hierarchically with separate
modules for different capabilities) but rather proceeds bottom-up, from the
already instantiated
behaviors of the agent.
Thus the architecture designs that Mataric suggests are not changes to
the
basic architecture but a systematic addition of new
capabilities to the
basic subsumption model.
